The Corporation of London provides local government services for the Square Mile of the City of London and also funds and manages a diverse regeneration programme across the City fringe. This programme seeks to enable people and business in the neighbouring boroughs to benefit more effectively from the prosperity of the City.
As part of this programme, the Corporation is a partner in the Hackney PowerMaths Project, a joint initiative with City of London School, City University and The Learning Trust (the independent Local Education Authority for the borough). The project uses innovative and interactive programming of Excel software to improve mathematics attainment amongst students aged between 13 and 16 years old in all Hackney secondary schools.
Student volunteers from City University support the project leader deliver the teaching method. Through a combination of direct teaching in class, intensive revision sessions, support to teachers and the development of educational materials, the project provides enrichment to the maths curriculum and helps pupils improve their maths results and motivation levels.
